Liam Murphy

In my role, I rarely do the same thing twice. Working in a team that thrives on new challenges, my variety of experience allows me to provide unique insights and practical support to our clients. While it requires me to be well-versed and focused on various insolvency legislation, I still look for ways to be creative and find value in the grey areas, while taking the time to understand the impact of each solution on my clients and their stakeholders.

As an Advisory Partner in Halifax, I specialize in complex restructuring, corporate advisory, M&A, and insolvency engagements. My industry experience includes mandates across North America in agriculture, energy, real estate and construction, retail, manufacturing, aerospace, and non-for-profit. I have acted as a financial advisor to companies and lenders, as well as a court officer under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, a trustee in bankruptcy pursuant to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, and as both a private and court-appointed receiver. I have extensive and recent experience operating in highly regulated industries, and supporting clients and stakeholders through conflict resolution. In addition to being a Chartered Professional Accountant, I’m also a Chartered Insolvency and Restructuring Professional, and a Licensed Insolvency Trustee.

Working in corporate restructuring, I take a measured and analytical approach to help my clients develop and execute a strategy to maximize value in difficult situations. While they may find themselves in stressful times, I do my best to gain a complete understanding of their critical issues by asking questions and gathering business insights, recognizing my clients know their business best, and looking for opportunities to bring creative solutions from across our Advisory practice. I also consult my colleagues on specific tax or financial accounting challenges to make sure I foresee the risks as well as potential benefits to each solution. This ensures my recommendations are based on good data and the collective insights of our team, and that my client gets a comprehensive view of their path forward.

The quality and future of the professional community is important to me. That’s why I invest my time in coaching junior colleagues, guiding them through mock exams and sharing professional insights to help them thrive.

Outside of work, I spend a lot of time with my family and friends. I love to be outside as much as I can, whether that’s with a guitar around a campfire, walking with my dog in the woods, or downhill skiing. I also love reading a good book, or connecting with my community.
